With my mom's passing and the last few years leading up to it, I have been in a bit of a funk....but I am coming out of it and have promised myself that once tax season is over, I will catch my blog back up and keep it up to date. I want to have these memories documented for both me and my littles.

Until then I will leave you with an updated picture!
"From dust did she come" ... On Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, our beloved best friend, mommy and Nonna, Susan Phillips, 69, finally won her battle. In true Woody Stallard fashion, she kept missing the exit to heaven and was almost late. She finally found her way, right on time. May her sweet, loving soul rest in peace. Her memory will always guide and inspire us to live better lives.

Service: 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3401 Bellaire Drive South, 76109. Please join us to pay respects and offer farewells to our beloved Susie.

As I sit in my mom's hospice room working remotely to pass the time, 19 days after she arrived here, I am reflecting on what the last few weeks has brought to me. I want to be able to remember this time because although it has been one of the most trying times in my life, I also have a lot of beautiful special memories with my mom, family and friends. As I sit here, listening to my mom's extremely shallow breathing with long pauses, wondering if that one might be the first of the last, I need to "re-member" my mom and the latest journey she has taken us on.
If you know my mom, you know that she has a beautiful soul. She is reserved and sort of reclusive, but if you know her well, you know that when you are blessed to be in her presence, she loves to laugh, gives her love freely and is such a fun person to be around. She is positive, extremely stubborn and has a never give up attitude. I always knew she was stubborn, but it has been in the past sever weeks/years since this battle started that I realized that she is where I get my never give up attitude from.
On July 3, 2012 my mom went into the hospital with extremely low blood levels. Her tumor had been bleeding a lot and she had been getting blood transfusions about every 7-10 days for months. She stayed in the hospital for 3 weeks. They told us that there wasn't anything more they could do but continue giving her blood, but due to the amount she had already had, there were beginning to be a lot of risks with continuing on that course.
On Monday 7/23/12, she was transported to a hospice facility. That was the best decision that all of us made, including my mother. They gave her some medicine that morning to help her not be anxious and to help her not be car sick. When she arrived at hospice around noon, she spent the rest of the day sleeping. One of the promises she had to look forward to at hospice was seeing her grandchildren. By about 6PM she had woken up enough that I decided to bring them by for a quick visit. Mom ate dinner the entire time we were here. Devin colored two pictures for my mom, a little girl with a kitty and a horse. They have been hanging on the bulletin board in her room since the day she arrived. iI actually folded them both and put them in her hands to be sent with her body for eternity. My mom had spent a lot of time in bed for the previous months anyway and when we would come over, Devin would just climb in bed with her and Cooper would plan on the floor. So it wasn't alarming to Devin at all since the facility here is a lot more home like. My mom enjoyed watching the children play in her room and interacting with them in a limited capacity. We left, and when I called my mom later that night on her cell phone, I was very surprised that she actually answered. She told me she had slept all day and didn't get dinner and had asked them for some toast and yogurt. I reminded her that she ate the entire time we had visited. She couldn't remember any of it and kept saying she felt so stupid. I assured her that they were probably just happy that she wanted to eat!
Tuesday 7/24/12 was scheduled to be a big day for us. We had been trying to plan a baptism for my children for this Summer, but with mom in and out of the hospital and pretty sick and weak, it just hadn't come to fruition. So we planned to have the baptism there in her hospice room. When I called for the morning update that day, my brother told me that mom had really taken a turn for the worse that day and that the nurse had said she only had 24-48 hours. I left work and came straight to her room. She was in and out of lucidity, she could barely even swallow anymore. She was in a lot of pain and getting morphine often. It was pretty crazy how fast this was all of a sudden happening. We were able to have the baptism that afternoon in her room and it was a beautiful small ceremony. Father Pool blessed all of us, and also read her her last rights without it being too obvious. It was extremely ahrd for me to leave that evening knowing that she could die overnight but the nurses assured us they would call us if they saw any change.
My dad had planned to bring her kitty to see her on Wednesday but given her steep decline, he decided to bring the cat this day as well. That went well.
Wednesday 7/25/12: Much to my suprise, I didn't get a phone call overnight. When I walked in and went straight to the nurses station, she told me that my mom was having a rally. Wow! She was sitting up in bed, eating, talking and carrying on. She was very confused all day, and as the day progressed, she became less and less lucid. It was such a gift to have one more day of her conversing with us all. My cousin Awol came to town this day to help me with the kids for the week so I could stay focused on mom. When she arrived in town and walked in my mom said to her: You two are just like sisters. You have always been like sisters. You are so lucky to have that. Those words could not be more true. I am so lucky to have a twin cousin who is more like a sister to me than anything else.
Mom didn't remember anything about the day before including the baptism or the visit from her kitty. So dad brought the kitty up again. I also brought the children up again this day. This would be the last time I would bring them.
Also, important for me to note for myself, this was the last day she had any food or drink.
Thursday 7/26/12: Today when I arrived, mom was awake talking to my Aunt Emily, but she was not very coherent. She said a lot of really funny and strange things this day. First, she kept telling us they hadn't brought her breakfast and she wanted coffee. She wanted cofee and coffee and coffee. She was really adamant about getting her coffee, and once it arrived, she never drank any. She also at one point was sitting up and said, "oh, I have lost a finger" as if it had just jumped off her hand and ran off. I laughed hysterically about this. This is such a typical type of thing my mom would say and it just really stuck with me. She was also talking about someone from 20+ years ago and somebody trying to kill him. This really did happen apparently according to my aunt Emily. She made another comment about really needing to get that sand off her foot. She went on and on about it until my cousin Alison gently wiped it off for her. She also asked us if she had had a stroke or something. This was all in about a 1-2 hour time span in the morning, after that she spent the rest of the day sleeping and very hard to rouse. She had also told Emily the day before that she was hoping to get out and run errands with her today.
Friday 7/27/12: This day mom was mostly unresponsive. The one thing that really sticks out to me about this day was that she cried. It was while she was unresponsive, but it really made my dad and my brother and I really upset.
Sunday 7/29/12: Mom had been mostly unresponsive now for several days. I insisted that I stay this day while they gave her a bath because I knew that my best chance of any response from her was going to be while they were moving her. She shows us that she knows we are there in multiple ways, but they aren't always super obvious. That night, when I called for my nightly update, the tech commented that the night before when she had told my mom that I had called to check on her and that I loved her, that she had cried lots of tears. As soon as I heard that, I told Chris I had to go up there and see her. I had been having a really hard day this day missing my mom. The reality that I would probably never have another two way conversation with her was really setting in. I hadn't had any quality alone time with her in weeks either, since before she left the hospital.
I went up there and I had a great conversation with her. She didn't speak, but she knew I was there because she was crying and moving her jaw and moaning as if she was sobbing. She and I cried together and it was a much needed response. I gave her my blessing to stop fighting once again this night. I noticed for the first time this night that her hands were starting to get cold which is a sign that things are changing.
Monday 7/30/12: This day I went into the office and worked in the morning then came back and worked from her room for the afternoon. She didn't really respond to me that day at all. I came up that night and I read her "Love you Forever". This book always makes me cry when I read it to Devin. I can't believe I didn't shed one tear reading it to her.
This day I also received a really sweet card from my Uncle David and Aunt Rebecca. When I opened the card, there was my mom's birth announcement. I read that to my mom as well and explained to her about how hard it is to be born, and that it is equally as hard to die.
Tuesday 7/31/12: The next several days my mother was basically unresponsive. Every now and then she would tell you she loved you when you said it to her. She also had a lot of terminal restlessness. She tries to lift her head and says she needs to get out of bed.
Wednesday 8/1/12: This evening when I visited, I read her a poem titled "Life's Western Window". I am not sure who the author is. My grandmother loved this poem and asked that it be read at her funeral so I thought it might be a good thing to read to help her in her transition towards her next journey.
Friday 8/3/12: This was Chris' birthday. I worked from her room this morning and then went and spent the afternoon and evening with Chris and Kortnee. I took Chris out to eat a really nice dinner since it was his 40th and I hadn't been able to pull together a party for him which I had really wanted to do. He and I went by for a quick visit on the way home to tuck my mom in for the night. She knew we were both there and was moving her mouth as if she wanted to talk. It really upset Chris' because he hadn't seen her since the baptism. But it was nice to have an obvious confirmation that she knew we were present.
Saturday 8/4/12: Basically the next several days she was pretty unresponsive. She would sometimes track us with her eyes, or even blink, but that was about it. This evening her blood pressure dropped to the lowest it had ever been as well as her O2 saturations. Her heart rate also started to increase. I felt certain that she only had days left.
Tuesday 8/712: The next two days she spent a lot of time being very agitated. She was very restless and kept trying to move. This is terminal restlessness.
Thursday 8/9/12: My dad called me and told me that while he was there visiting, she started doing that fish out of water breathing. I called and spoke to her nurse. They were telling people that they should say there goodbyes. No one will give us timelines, especially for my mom, because at this point, they feel she is a medical miracle. She should have been gone that Tuesday after she arrived. They felt she was actively dying then. They felt it would likely be 24 hours or less, if that, but that it would probably happen overnight. My brother and I both came directly to her room after work and spent several hours with her. She had stopped the fish out of water breathing but her breathing has definately become more shallow and sporadic with apne mixed in.
Friday 8/10/12: I wasn't really surprised when I called this morning and she was still alive. She is still hanging in there. Her breathing continues to be very shallow and her apnea is lasting longer and longer. I am working from her room today so that I can stay close by........more to come later.
----------------------------------------------
Later: Almost as soon as I hit publish, my mom gasped for air and stopped breathing for about 5 minutes. I had the nurse come give her some morphine to help calm her and help her not fight it. She somehow from the depths of her body found a way to start breathing again. Both the nurse and I thought that was her moment, but she had other plans. We joke that it took her 5 minutes to decide whether to take the hand of the angel leading her to Heaven or the one keeping her here and she changed her mind at the last minute.
Saturday 8/11/12: Mom has been fish out of water breathing on and off for 2 days now. Most patients can't last more than 10-12 hours they say. In the morning she did a lot of what I like to think of as talking to angels. She made a lot of sounds, but we all agreed, she didn't not seem to be in pain.

At 10:15PM After a long hard fight, my mother finally won her battle. In true Woody Stallard fashion, she kept missing the exit to Heaven and was almost late. She found her way though right on time. May you rest in peace sweet mommy. Such a dear loving soul. Her memory will always shine a bright light in my life. My brother was with her when she passed, and I arrived minutes later. I had resolved weeks ago that I was OK if I didn't make it in time. I really wanted to be there, but I knew that what should happen would. I know in my heart that she needed Edward to have this experience that will forever change him. I am so thankful she was not alone and that her passing was very peaceful.
It seems like I don't have a lot of time to post on my blog these days and when I do, I try to keep up with Coop's monthly updates. And with that, Devin gets left out.

Just for my records, my mom got diagnosed with cancer again this year in March 2012. This is the 3rd time now and this time it is stage IV and incurable. She has been in a clinical trial and in and out of the hospital since being diagnosed. Between Dr's visits with mom, and just trying to spend every minute that we could with her, the blog has taken a back seat. She is currently in hospice. She has been there since 7/23/12. She is still hanging on. It is surprising to everyone including the nurses that she is still here, but it just goes to show how strong her will is. She has been mostly unresponsive for a little over a week now with brief periods where she comes to for a few minutes or will react when one of us is speaking to her. She can't really speak but has muttered I love you a few times and a few other words every now and then. This part has been really hard on my dad, my brother and me. It is like she is gone already, but her body is still here and she is still living. Thankfully she is comfortable and her pain is well controlled by a continuous morphine drip with an extra bolus of it when needed. But it is torture to see her like this. We are all ready for her to find peace and gain some closure so that we can grieve in the ways that we need to.

But now that I have documented that a little bit since it has been such a huge part of our life lately, I thought I would show you some of my favorite Devin pics! She is the sweetest funniest little girl with such a huge personality!

We went on a fun trip to the Zoo with my boss and her mom, niece and great nephew Gavin. Gavin and Devin are only two weeks apart and his mom Chelsea and I had so much fun being pregnant together!
Coop is growing fast! Before I know it, I will need to start planning his first birthday!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17847386945524036863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789879453373247110.post-33475337076560002702012-05-03T09:45:00.001-05:002012-05-03T09:45:15.140-05:00First ER visitCoop officially had his first ER visit last night. He bumped his eye on the side of the tub during his bath last night which resulted in a very late night for both of us and 4 stitches! He slept in the Mei Tei for most of the time we were there waiting and went right back to sleep when he was done getting stitches. Such a little champ!

This was when we first arrived.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17847386945524036863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789879453373247110.post-70336208728753397652012-04-30T20:40:00.001-05:002012-04-30T20:40:25.721-05:00Special CartCooper feels like such a big boy sitting in the special cart with sister!

How in the world do I have TWO children big enough to sit in the special cart?!

D is almost 3 1/2 years old, C is 10 months old and I can't believe how time is flying!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17847386945524036863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789879453373247110.post-86482042394018319922012-04-18T10:57:00.001-05:002012-04-18T10:57:12.642-05:00My sweet little princessSince my blog has sort of taken a back seat during this busy season of my life, I wanted to give a little update some of the things Devin is up to as well as the rest of us. I am trying to get the monthly Cooper posts up since he is changing so quickly each month and this is my only baby book, but my sweet little princess is changing too! This will go back a few months. :)

Once of Devin's favorite new things in the past few months is to go out to eat. I often take the kids to lunch on a Saturday afternoon while Chris is at work. She is all about eating at a restaurant and now that she isn't quite as picky of an eater, she is a great lunch date!

Another obsession would be going to birthday parties and having cake!

From January 12

As much as she loves her bounce house, she is never really into them at parties. Too many wild kids in them. She did LOVE this pony though and rode it about 20 times!
Anytime I work at home and she is with me, she always gets her computer and pulls up a chair so she can typewrite too. :)

The water table is by far a favorite outdoor activity for BOTH kids! She also loves to go dig int he dirt and get it in the water. It makes for a mess! I think she might need a sand table. :)
*Coop is all over the place and into everything!!! He crawls, pulls up, sits up, stands for a few seconds unsupported. He is starting to cruise a tiny bit on furniture.

*Coop still wakes up about every 3 hours at night. We go through phases. He will sleep all night, then revert back to waking. He has so much going on developmentally. As much as I would like for him to sleep all night, I am not sweating the small stuff!

*Cooper has 5 teeth now!!!

*Coop eats three meals a day and is doing well with his cheerios and veggie bites. I'm hoping that as he masters these skills, I will be able to start giving him some cut up cooked veggies and deli meat.

*Cooper is wearing a size 4 diaper now to help with leakage. We have switched back to our trusty old Pampers!
*Cooper wears size 9 month or 12 month clothes. I am tired of buying a new wardrobe every 3 months so I am buying 12 month stuff now and some 18 month stuff for Summer.
*Cooper weighs around 18 pounds. He is in the 50% for weight, height and head circumference.

*Coop eats three solid meals a day. He has rice cereal during the day at school, and a veggie/fruit for lunch, then usually a meat and oatmeal for dinner.
*Cooper still nurses every 2 hours or so.
*We are still battling the bedtime changes. He still wakes about 45 minutes into the night most nights (sometimes even sooner) and then sleeps in 2-3 hour increments usually. I have been trying a lot of different things to change this behavior. Crying it out just hasn't worked on him so we are having to get creative. In the past month we have had quite a few more sleeps through the night after that first wake up but have also had a few nights where he wakes every hour or even more.
*Cooper is a rolling machine!

*He is also army crawling and inching along to wherever he wants to be. He does push ups too and tries to get his knees under him.

*Cooper is finally sitting unsupported some, but still needs to be spotted. I know he can do it, but feel like he is just too busy to stay still long enough to stay in one place for any amount of time.
*Cooper got his first ear infection this month. :( He also got pink eye this month.
*When we are at home (as opposed to school) he usually takes a 45 minutes-2hour morning nap about 2 1/12 hours after he wakes up each morning. He is usually about ready for another nap after 2-3 hours of awake time but it is always hit and miss whether I can get him to settle enough to take another one.
*Cooper has started babbling big time this month. He has just recently started saying what sounds like da-da!
*Cooper is also really into toys now. I recently got all of Devin's toys for 6 months plus down out of the attic, and they both had a great time exploring them all, and fighting over them. Oye!
*Cooper had his first babysitter come to the house this month. He was such a happy baby that day and did great for her. He didn't even wake up at his usual 45 minutes!
*Cooper has had a cold for pretty much the last two months. I will be happy when cold and flu season is over and he has some time to not be sick. He usually ends up taking breathing treatments with most colds.
*At school Cooper holds his own bottle, and usually drinks around 3 oz of breastmild every two hours.
*Cooper's hair is so very blonde and so far his eyes are still blue! I love how his hair sticks straight up in the air!
*He loves to be worn still and we have recently tried out a different wrap style carrier in a forward facing position. He really liked that!
*Cooper still nurses every 2 hours or so.
*We are still battling the bedtime changes. He wakes about 45 minutes into the night most nights and then sleeps in 2-3 hour increments usually. I have been trying a lot of different things to change this behavior. Crying it out just hasn't worked on him so we are having to get creative.
*Cooper also stopped taking a paci in the past month. I have gotten out some different brands and even bought a new brand. I don't care what anyone else says, I am desperate for him to take one from time to time so I have continued to offer it. I am almost done pushing the issue but I have to give it a fair shot. I remember how sad I was when Devin no longer had one for comfort and I am way more sad about it this time! Plus, I really don't want a thumb sucker and he is already finding it!
*He also is very ticklish and LOVES to laught!
*Devin would be one of Cooper's favorite people in the world. I love to see his face light up anytime she pays any attention to him or even just enters the vicinity he is in. She is pretty darn crazy about him too!
*When we are at home (as opposed to school) he usually takes a 45 minutes-1 1/2 hour morning nap about 2 hours after he wakes up each morning. He is usually about ready for another nap after 2 hours of awake time but it isn't always easy to get him to settle into taking one so we often end up on the go for this one so he will sleep in motion. Not the best, but better than nothing.
*Cooper bounces like a fool in his jumperoo and gets mad often in the exercauser because he can't make it bounce.
*He also likes to try to bounce/jump while you hold him.
*When I compare the pictures of Devin at 6 months to Coop, I think they look so much alike!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17847386945524036863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789879453373247110.post-41395871547313660312012-01-02T09:43:00.001-06:002012-01-02T09:43:43.607-06:00MilkDevin just told me, "I have to open Big Birds mouth so he can have some milk!"

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17847386945524036863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789879453373247110.post-47927516363006392412012-01-02T09:40:00.001-06:002012-01-02T09:40:15.294-06:00BeautifulDevin just said, " Daddy's gonna love this, can we call daddy and tell him how beautiful my dress is?"

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17847386945524036863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1789879453373247110.post-66394115366282326382011-12-01T09:20:00.001-06:002011-12-01T12:55:46.989-06:005 months oldOh my word, my handsome little dude is 5 months old! *Cooper weighs almost 16 pounds.
*He is wearing size 3-6 and 6 months, but with colder weather here, I have been putting him in a lot of 6-9 and 9 month clothes and they seem to fit as well.
*He is wearing a size 3 diaper.
*He still exclusively eats breastmilk, although that will be changing very soon!
*Cooper has never been a very good napper. He usually takes about two 45 minute naps a day and goes to bed between 7:30 and 8 and sleeps until I wake him around 7:15.
*Cooper went on his first road trip last weekend to Austin to visit his Tia Awol. He woke up the morning we left with a terrible chest cold and those sleeping habits in the preceeding line have changed drastically. We are trying to get him back on track!
*Cooper has discovered his feet this month! Most mornings when I go in his room, he is just waking up, and he is often chewing those feet! The feet of his PJ's are always soaked from his slobbober! It sure does make diaper changes harder too!
*Cooper has got quite a grip these days. If you give him a toy and he drops it, if it is within his reach and sight, he will look for it and grab it.
*Cooper LOVES to shake his rattle up and down vigorously!
*While doing tummy time, Cooper has rolled from his front to his back a few times now. He still hasn't roller from his back to his front, but he sure is close to it!
*Devin and Cooper interact so much more these days. They love to play together and she can make him laugh just by being herself!
*Coop has a ticklish spot right in the center of his chest that I can make him laugh when I take my nose and rub there. I can do it with my finger too but my nose seems to find the spot better.

*Every morning when I nurse Cooper in the study, while Devin watches cartoons, he always finishes off by trying to watch some cartoons too. I know he is done eating when he no longer tries to go back for more, and instead turns his head as far to the other side to see if he can see the TV!
*For the most part, Coop seems to have pretty much given up the paci. I'm not sure why I even try still, but he very rarely takes it, and it usually makes him mad when you give it to him!

*Coop LOVES his doggy toy that is in his car seat. He always fusses when I put him in his car seat but as soon as I hand it to him, he usually quiets down.
*Coop also often fusses when we are in the car and it isn't moving. He always wants to be moving! It can make for an interesting drive in traffic!

There is nothing sweeter to me than seeing the bond these two have formed and watching it grow! Every morning as we get out at school, Devin insists that she needs to kiss Cooper's head before we can get out of the car. It makes this momma's heart flutter!
I love this little outtake of Devin and Cooper. He was jsut a few weeks old here and Devin was so incredibly proud of him. She still is, but it was so new still here.
We spent lots of time outside under the gazebo with the fan blowing full force. For 110+ temps, it wasn't too miserable there.
Of course when Cherry is in town, we get to see more of Aunt Patsy and Uncle Tim as well.

Aunt Patsy could hardly wait to get her hands on that baby and once she did, she didn't give him back until it was time for him to eat again! :)
We still aren't sure if it was a spinal headache (would have had to have been a really slow leak) or a tension headache (more likely since my neck was stiff from being curled in a ball for over an hour trying to get a good epidural). Either way, I came home Thursday, felt OK on and off on Friday, on Saturday I felt great all day until that night when the headache always seemed to come back, then Sunday morning I was miserable when I woke up. I texted Dr. B that I was seriously condisering checking myself into the ER because of the pain, and she called back and put me on bedrest for the next 48 hours with round the clock painkillers. This did the trick! And it was probably an answered prayer because Devin had woken up the night before with a high fever and couging. For the next 48 hours, Cooper and I hung out in my room and slept and played ont he bed when he was awake and Devin, Daddy and Sissy hung out in the rest of the house.

This was taken the night we got home. Devin was pretty obsessed with Cooper and has been since the day she met him.

From July 11

We did have a really good Saturday though. My mom and dad came by and mom got to meet and hold Cooper...

From July 11

and thankfully so because mom was right at the end of radiation and chemo, and went into the hospital for 3 weeks shortly after this. So he was much older and bigger by the next time she got to see him.

That Saturday while I was feeling pretty good, Devin and Sissy and I went and ran some errands. We went to the library together and D really enjoyed it!
